From Suburban Block to Sustainable Farm: A Producer’s Passionate Journey
Nestled at the base of Tamborine Mountain, a small-scale farm is making waves not just for its bountiful produce but for the heartfelt story behind its inception.
Meet the incredible producer, Jaimi Pennell at Forgotten Sound Farm, whose passion for purpose beyond motherhood has transformed a tiny suburban block into a flourishing farm, nourishing both her family and the land.
Now, eight months into her dream, Jaimi is making a significant impact in the Scenic Rim, where her commitment to sustainable farming practices and hands-on approach not only yields exceptional produce but also establishes a profound connection between the farm and its community.
Growing Beyond the Suburban Block
Fueled by creativity, Jaimi’s journey began after the birth of her second son. It was during this time that she planted the first seeds in her little veggie garden in the backyard of her suburban home. This passion for growing sprouted during her early years as a young mother—a time when she longed for a purpose beyond motherhood, one that could also nurture her creative tendencies.
“Growing food for my family helped tremendously when navigating postnatal depression. It was my solace; it was my purpose away from just being a mum.”
It wasn’t long before Jaimi outgrew their suburban block and dreamed of farming for a living.
A Whirlwind of Growth
Turning the pages to April 2023, Jaimi and her family finally embrace a new chapter, settling onto their farm in the beautiful Wonglepong, just five minutes from Canungra.
The move marked the inception of this new chapter, a whirlwind of activity swirling from infrastructure projects to a rapid sprint to market. Despite the anticipated challenges, the Pennells persevered.
“It may have taken us 8 years to get here and despite the initial challenges, we have now been consistently selling our produce for the last 5 months”
Nurturing the Earth: A Commitment to Soil Health
For Jaimi, soil health is the number one priority. From farming practices to fertility management, and how they advertise their producers is all reflected in their commitment farm “beyond organically.”
Not only does Forgotten Sound Farm not use any chemicals, but they actively build and improve upon this land.
Jaimi’s ethos is simple: give more to the land than you take.
A Quarter Acre of Intensive Farming
Forgotten Sound Farm may be a ‘micro-farm’ with just over a quarter acre of land, yet it is farmed intensively to yield a diverse array of seasonal vegetables. At the moment they are growing juicy cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, an abundance of zucchini, Asian greens, turmeric, ginger and lots more. As the climate changes, so does the produce, with kale, broccoli, garlic, potatoes, and lettuce making their way back into the mix shortly.
Products and Process: Human-Scale Production with a Personal Touch
What sets Forgotten Sound Farm apart from others is its human-scale production size.
Instead of using tractors, Jaimi uses specifically designed hand tools + a lot of elbow grease to get farm jobs done.
“Every seed, plant and harvested product has been nurtured by my two hands before it makes it to our customers’ homes, which I think is a really special connection.”
Sustainable Soil Health: Cultivating Life
At the heart of Jaimi’s farm lies an unwavering commitment to sustainability and regeneration, particularly through the lens of improving soil health. Every decision they make, from the cultivation of their growing beds to the materials they use in their pathways, is deeply rooted in these principles.
“Our growing beds are never bare soil, either covered in thick mulch or a compost layer which builds and protects soil life. Our pathways are filled with deep locally sourced woodchip which encourages fungal networks but also acts as a hydration buffer in the dry periods.
Another vital practice we employ involves leaving as many roots as possible in the ground after harvesting crops. These roots, as they break down, become a feast for microorganisms, nurturing the soil’s biodiversity. This method helps trap carbon in the soil, playing a small but impactful role in combating climate change.”
Passing on Wisdom: Advice for Home Gardeners
There’s a common misconception that local organic produce comes with a hefty price tag, but the reality is quite the opposite. When you choose to eat seasonally, you’re enjoying foods that local farmers have in abundance. This abundance translates to more reasonable prices compared to items that have been trucked from the far reaches of the country.
So, whether you are looking to source fresh, local and seasonal produce from the Scenic Rim region or wanting to grow your own at home, Jaimi’s golden rule is simple yet powerful.
Consistently look after your soil.
No surprises there! It’s a give-and-take relationship, and the more you give to your soil, the more it gives back in the form of incredibly flavourful produce.
This piece of wisdom derived from years of hands-on experience and a profound connection to the earth.
So, whether you’re supporting local farmers or tending to your own garden, the key is to embrace the beauty of local, seasonal, and well-nurtured produce.
A Sustainable Legacy
In the picturesque landscape of the Scenic Rim, Forgotten Sound Farm stands as a testament to passion, dedication, and a commitment to sustainability. As they continue to grow and nourish both the land and their community, Jaimi’s story serves as inspiration for anyone looking to cultivate purpose and healing through the soil beneath their feet.
