Harvesting & Family Fun
Duration
3 days
Region
Scenic Rim
Transport
Self-drive
Some weekends are about letting the kids lead. This one hands them the shovel, the saddle, and the show bag and watches what happens. Never fear; adult fun is included.
Across three days in the Western Scenic Rim, families will forage on sixth-generation farmland, ride vintage LandCruisers through productive paddocks, cheer on Dachshunds at the Kalbar Show, harvest carrots straight from Queensland’s most celebrated carrot farm, pick edible flowers, and get up close with working beehives. Every experience is hands-on, every moment is genuinely memorable, and every meal tastes better when you’ve had something to do with growing it. Fair warning: the kids will talk about this one for years.

DAY 1 — Fri 19 June
Afternoon – Fri 19 June
From the lake to the paddock, younger families climb aboard a vintage 1979 LandCruiser Troop Carrier for Progressive Paddock at Scenic Rim Farm Shop & Café for, a proper farm foraging adventure through the productive fields of Kalbar. Pick fresh produce along the way before settling into the garden for a two-course lunch that tastes exactly like where it came from. A genuinely fun, genuinely delicious introduction to farm life. Muddy hands very much welcome.

Or for Older Kids and adventurers spend the day on Tommerup’s sixth-generation dairy farm for one of the Scenic Rim’s most immersive experiences – Forage to Feast. Feed the pigs, milk the Jersey cows, separate cream, churn butter, and sit down to an extraordinary Wild Canary feast created with produce from just metres away. Thought-provoking, hands-on, and the kind of day that stays with you long after the weekend is over.

DAY 2 — Sat 20 June
Morning – Sat 20 June
Saturday’s centrepiece is one of the most genuinely exciting behind-the-scenes farm experiences in the region, and it only happens once a year, Kalfresh Carrot Day. At Kalfresh Vegetables, families go deep inside one of Queensland’s largest carrot farms to see exactly how carrots are grown, harvested, washed, and packed. Meet the farmers, climb up close to the tractors, wander the fields, and pick your own bag of carrots straight from the soil to take home. Hands-on, eye-opening, and the kind of experience that makes even the most vegetable-resistant child suddenly, inexplicably, very interested in carrots.

Afternoon
After the farm, the Kalbar Show provides the perfect family-friendly finish to Saturday. Wander the showgrounds from 9:30am, take in the animals, rides and competitions at your own pace, then stay as the evening comes alive, the ABBA Girls Tribute Show, Dachshund Races, Aussie FMX team, and Bendigo Bank Skylighter Fireworks at 7pm rounding out a big day in the most spectacular way possible.
DAY 3 — Sun 21 June
Morning – Sun 21 June
Choose one or do both we don’t judge we support!
Sunday opens gently among the flower fields with Edible Flower Picking & Cupcake Decorating at Elderflower Farm, where a guided tour leads families through colourful beds of edible blooms. Learn which flowers you can eat, handpick your favourites, then sit down to ice and decorate cupcakes with your freshly picked flowers to enjoy or take home. Creative, sensory, and magical, the kind of morning that makes everyone smile.

From flowers to hives, the morning continues with Scenic Rim Bees and Cheese at Towri Sheep Cheeses where Jason from Bee All Natural suits the family up for a proper beekeeping encounter. Explore working hives, harvest golden honey straight from the frame, and pair it with a platter of artisan Towri sheep cheeses. Sweet, creamy, and endlessly fascinating. The kind of hands-on experience that makes bees feel a lot less scary and cheese taste even better. Taste both together to truly appreciate the saying ‘opposites attract’, creamy and sweet its quiet the treat.
