Eat Local entrée events whet the appetite

And we’re off and eating!

The Eat Local Week entrée events are underway and are providing a taster of what’s to come from June 30.

The inaugural Play with Your Food Workshop at White Chapel/Black Hall Kalbar was a big hit, providing a day of inspiration and delicious insights.

A group of 25 guests spent the day learning about cooking with local produce, replicating recipes from Volume 2 of EAT LOCAL and also gaining tips on food styling, cake decorating and food photography.

The morning session was led by Brenda Fawdon and Christine Sharp, authors of EAT LOCAL.

The afternoon session was led by chef and food consultant Alison Alexander, regional food ambassador Caroline Jones of Three Girls Skipping, and photographer and stylist Shannon Deutrom from The Source Creative.

The group enjoyed a shared long-table lunch created by Julia Matusik from Julia’s Pantry.
It featured a silverbeet, foraged nettle and spring onion crostata, roasted carrot and pearl barley salad with apricots and macadamias, heirloom tomatoes with whipped camel feta.
Served with wines from The Overflow 1895 Estate and a beetroot raspberry and lavender cordial.

Produce featured in the day came from Peak Veggie Patch, Summer Land Camel Farm, Kalfresh Vegetables, Rangeview Fresh and Valley Pride Produce, Scenic Rim Lavender.

The second entree event was Jamming with the Lambs at Towri Sheep Farm.

Guests arrived in the afternoon to meet and cuddle the sheep, including newborn Uno. Farmer Carolyn Davidson and her daughter Dallas were on hand to chat with guests about the sheep, the milk, and the farm operation.

The long-tabled shared plate meal with paired wine was created by Scenic Rim regional food ambassador Cameron Matthews, of Winston Restaurant and consultant group chef to Spicers Retreats.

The menu featured a selection of Towri cheeses, bread from Arthur Clive’s Family Bakehouse, assorted Scenic Rim winter vegetables, Tamborine Mountain rhubarb, Green Lane Coffee, Lavender tea from Scenic Rim Lavender and Rathdowney honey.
Wines were provided by Witches Falls Winery and The Overflow 1895 Estate and beers from Scenic Rim Brewery (including the new Ewe Brew milk stout).

An 80-strong crowd attended, drawn from Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen and State MP for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, attended with guests from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Brisbane.
